How do I know if I need therapy, and when should I see a Therapist?
People seek therapy for a multitude of different reasons. Therapy can be a valuable resource for individuals who are struggling to navigate life's various challenges. Whether it's navigating complex relationships, struggling with feelings of hopelessness or a lack of purpose, or seeking to understand the motivations behind your life choices, therapy can provide a supportive avenue for self-exploration. Furthermore, therapy offers solace for those dealing with ongoing stress, coping with grief, or processing traumatic experiences. Therapy offers a compassionate and supportive environment in which people can explore their inner selves, which can serve to foster greater levels of self-awareness and improve mental well-being.

How do I find a Therapist and how do I know if someone is going to be a good fit for me?
When looking for a therapist, there are a few key factors should guide your decision. Assessing a Therapist's educational background, evaluating the cost of their services, and understanding their specific area of expertise are all important factors to consider. Additionally, it's essential to reflect on more personal aspects, such as whether you prefer a therapist who shares a similar lived experience or cultural background. If you are searching for a therapist online, there are several great online platforms (such as Psychology Today and Healing In Color) that can be invaluable in identifying therapists in your area. Alternatively, you can also ask your family doctor for a trusted referral to help you find a therapist best suited to your needs and preferences.
How should I prepare for my first session?
Understanding what to expect during your first therapy session can provide a sense of comfort. Typically, the first session is dedicated to gathering detailed information about your experiences and the reasons behind your decision to come to therapy. I encourage clients to approach the first session with an open mind, and embrace the potential for positive transformation and maintain a receptive attitude toward the therapeutic process. In an effort to facilitate productive sessions, I always suggest that clients consider jotting down specific topics and concerns they wish to address during our time together, as this can be particularly helpful. It is important to be prepared to openly express your feelings and concerns, recognizing that your needs, thoughts, and opinions hold equal importance alongside a therapist's expertise in guiding the therapeutic process.
How often will I need to attend sessions?
While I often tell my clients that coming more often in the beginning of your therapeutic journey can be very beneficial, I practice empowering clients to make their own choices about the frequency of therapy sessions, as I believe this is essential for fostering a sense of agency and autonomy in your healing journey. Everyone's needs and circumstances are unique, and what works best for one person may not be the same for someone else. I encourage clients to determine how often they attend therapy based on their comfort level, progress, financial situation, and evolving requirements. Flexibility allows for a more personalized and effective therapeutic experience, and can ensure that therapy remains a supportive resource tailored to each client's individual pace and goals.
How much do sessions cost and what payment methods do you accept?
I charge $170 per 60 minute sessions, for both individuals and couples. I accept cash (for in person appointments only), e-transfer, and credit card.
Do you offer direct billing?
Unfortunately I am unable to offer Direct Billing at this time. I provide all clients with a receipt at the end of each session, which clients can submit to their respective insurance company for reimbursement. Please note that coverage differs per plan - it is the client's sole responsibility to confirm whether their insurance plan includes coverage for Canadian Certified Counsellors and/or Registered Psychotherapists.
What if I feel like we are not a good therapeutic fit?
Sometimes, despite the best intentions and efforts, I recognize and respect that I will not be the right fit for every single client. It's important to acknowledge that therapy is a deeply personal and unique experience, and a strong therapeutic alliance is a key factor for success. When a therapist doesn't align well with a client, it can manifest as a lack of connection or discomfort during sessions. If you find yourself feeling this way, it's perfectly valid to explore other therapeutic options or ask your therapist for a referral to another professional. Finding a therapist who resonates with your needs, values, and communication style is crucial to ensure that you receive the most effective and supportive care. Ultimately, therapy is about your well-being, and seeking a better fit can lead to a more productive and fulfilling journey.
